Treadmills Are Easier Than Running or Jogging

June 26th, 2009

Treadmills are one of the sports equipment that allows a person to run or walk indoor. Treadmill uses similar principle that is employed in the grinding mills which utilizes a belt to connect with the motor. Treadmills are available in two different models. One is the cheap version in which doesn’t employ any motors. So the person has to get on it and walk or run on the band himself. This machine is cheap and does not require any electric power to use. The second model is costlier than the first one which includes a motor and the band moves automatically at different speeds set by the user.

A study by Elliot & Blanksby in Medicine and Science in Sports examined stride length and stride rate. The study recorded no significant differences in stride length or stride rate between running on a treadmill and outdoors when running between 3.3 and 4.8 meters per second. However, at higher speeds, stride length decreased, while stride rate, and the length of time the leg on the ground, increased. The authors didn’t conclude further, but their findings regarding higher speeds suggest the answer we are looking for. When running outdoors, our legs are propelling us forward. However, when running on a treadmill, we are simply staying in place, trying to keep up with the moving belt. In so doing, our leg muscles are working mostly at staying upright and moving at the right speed. This certainly seems like less work than moving forward, regardless of the speed at which we are “moving.” The calves and hamstrings seem particularly less burdened in this way by treadmill running.

Once you have spent so much on a treadmill, and whether you packed it with features and add-ons or not, there is a huge list of available accessories you can buy to make your treadmill even shinier. But beyond all the bells and whistles that you may or may not want, there are a few to consider that will actually help the lifespan of your machine as well as the performance.

The first thing you may want to consider buying is a home repair kit for your treadmill. This will be handy for minor problems you may encounter with your new toy and will save you from having to spend the time and money visiting a repair shop.
