Changing your furnace filter when necessary can not only improve the quality of air that you breathe, but can also help keep your furnace running properly. You will need to measure your old filter to know the proper size to replace it with. There are varying opinions on how often the filter should be changed, but most heat and air conditioning experts advise that you replace the old filter with a new one once a month.

Keeping a furnace filter clean during winter months is challenging. Some models have a removable type, while others have a disposable one. For maximum furnace efficiency, the filter should be changed or cleaned regularly. The owner’s manual will have a specific guideline on how often this should be done and what type of filter it is. For those uncomfortable replacing or cleaning the filter, have a furnace repair technician do it as needed.

A quality furnace filter traps as much airborne allergens as possible and improves the air you breathe. If you or any of your family members have allergies, asthma, or other breathing problems this is essential to your quality of life. An 8 MERV rated furnace filter is the minimum quality you should install in your system to maintain clean air. If you have pets or high traffic in your home you may consider selecting a 13 MERV filter. You will capture smaller irritants like germs and fine dust that hover in your air.

You may use filters that are also made by the furnace manufacturer. These are specifically designed by manufacturers to work best with their brand of furnace. These could be purchased online and they are relatively cheap. You can also purchase them from the manufacturer. There are many kinds of filters so do be particular about the type your furnace requires so you can get filters that would match your furnace. Guessing what filter you need would likely result in the getting the wrong size. That would be a total waste.
